Case Study

Mr & Mrs A are married in their late thirties with two  children. Mr A is employed and the couple have a mortgage of £150,000. Mrs A is diagnosed with a serious illness which leads to a successful operation. However Mrs A is left with side effects that will impact her health for the rest of her life. Mr & Mrs A successfully claim under the critical illness clause of their mortgage protection policy which pays a lump sum to clear their mortgage.

However the stress of his wife's condition, looking after the family, and holding down a full time job causes Mr A to fall ill. His employer pays him one month of salary after which Mr A is reliant on state benefits. Even with no mortgage Mr & Mrs A are in financial difficulties for two months until Mr A's income protection policy starts to pay 50% of his pre-illness earnings free of tax. The payments continue until Mr A can return to work or reaches his retirement date.

The family's lifestyle is largely unaffected from a financial viewpoint.
